Watch this video from The Bulwark’s Tim Miller. I watched it about 15 minutes after ranting the exact same thoughts at my long-suffering wife, who doesn’t want to hear about it any more, any more than you do. Tim is terrific, and bear in mind, he used to be a Republican strategist. His former party makes him almost literally sick to his stomach.
I gotta say, I couldn’t have done it. I couldn’t have stood there, ramrod straight, composed, smiling frequently, speaking evenly, and going through the lawful motions of the peaceful transfer of power, handing the country back to the pig who tried to burn the whole joint to the ground when it was his turn four years ago. I’d have wanted to deliver what we used to call The Big Rebuttal, back in my school days: Fuck you, fuck you, fuck you, fuuuuck you, and fuck this place.
But no, she did her whole duty, with grace, dignity, and a profound awareness that the Republic can never be pulled back from the brink if both parties lie, cheat, steal, and incite riot and insurrection to get their way. All I could think, as she played her part just as the Founders intended, was how little her increasingly wretched nation and its breathtakingly ignorant masses deserved her. She’s impeccable.
